Therapy and prevention of long-term cognitive impairment following neonatal herpes simplex virus infections

Advancing Science is a meeting series in a partnership between Herpes Cure Advocacy and HVTN to highlight the latest science in herpes, projects that are driving the field of HSV research forward amongst professionals and scientists.
The target audience for this talk is scientists and medical professionals.
Guest Speaker Name and Title:
Dr. David Leib (30-40 Minutes)
Chair and Professor of Microbiology and Immunology
The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth
Title: Therapy and prevention of long-term cognitive impairment following neonatal herpes simplex virus infections
Date: October 7th at 3:00pm EST
Brief description: Neonatal herpes simplex infection can cause devastating disease in newborns. I will describe our work on novel experimental treatment and therapeutic approaches including maternal vaccination and therapeutic antibodies. I will also present our studies of long-term cognitive impairment that follows neonatal infection, and the virulence genes that may be responsible for neurological damage.
Dr. David Leib Bio: David Leib received his BSc from The University of Birmingham, UK in 1983 in Biological Sciences. He then received his PhD from The University of Liverpool, UK in 1986 from the Department of Medical Microbiology. He did a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University with Dr Priscilla Schaffer from 1987-1990. He was then appointed to the faculty of Washington University in St Louis where he served as Professor until 2009, before moving to Dartmouth. He became Chair of Microbiology and Immunology in 2018. He has worked on HSV for over 35 years focusing on the molecular basis of latency and reactivation, on immune evasion mechanisms, and most recently on neonatal infections, and the impact of long-term HSV infection on memory and cognition.
