Please join Dr. David Kimberlin of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, a famed researcher in maternal HSV, as he gives a presentation on HSV as it impacts pregnancy and newborns. Dr. Kimberlin is excited to share about the realities of neonatal herpes, a rare yet often devastating manifestation of herpes in newborn children which can impact nearly every organ of the body.
Dr. David Kimberlin holds the Sergio Stagno Endowed Chair in Pediatric Infectious Diseases, where he is Associate Vice President for Clinical Trials at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is the Principal Investigator for the Collaborative Antiviral Study Group (CASG), now known as the Congenital and Perinatal Infections Consortium (CPIC), which is an U.S.-wide network of academic medical centers that evaluates antiviral therapeutics in rare diseases with a large unmet medical need, including neonatal herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections, congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease, congenital Zika syndrome, neonatal and infantile influenza infection, and neonatal enteroviral sepsis syndrome. Herpes Cure Advocacy has partnered with Dr. Kimberlin and CPIC in its most recent study of valacyclovir in neonates exposed to HSV at delivery. Other studies conducted under Dr. Kimberlin’s oversight have established the standard of care for neonatal herpes and congenital CMV, and have evaluated rapid diagnostic assays to detect HSV in women at the time of delivery. Dr. Kimberlin is Editor of the 2027 American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Report of the Committee on
Infectious Diseases (Red Book). He also was Editor of the 2024, 2021, 2018, and 2015 editions. Dr. Kimberlin also is Editor-in-Chief of Long’s Principles and Practice of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, which is the leading textbook in the field. Since 2025, Dr. Kimberlin has served on the National Sustainability Committee that is charged with determining if the United States is maintaining its measles elimination status. From 2007 through 2024, Dr. Kimberlin served as the AAP Red Book liaison to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). Dr. Kimberlin is a Past-President of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, and in 2022 received the Walter T. Hughes Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society Distinguished Physician Award. In 2016 he received the Ronald McDonald House Charities 2016 Medical Award of Excellence. He has received numerous education awards.
